Manny Pacquiao is a macho inside the boxing ring but some people are wondering if he applies a double standard as to gender roles when it comes to show business.
Some in Pacman’s Inner Circle tell me that Pacquiao has put his foot down on lovely wife Jinkee’s stated ambition to spread her wings and add acting to her steady role as wife and mother of the couple’s four children.
(Switching big fight gears, check out reporter Lito Gutierrez’s crisp, deadon piece on Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire, including his complicated situation with his father and ex-trainer.)
Jinkee, who was “hit on” by a then unknown Manny when she worked selling cosmetics at a store in hometown General Santos City, has several bubbling TV and movie offers from entertainment bigwigs based in Manila.
“The Congressman has vetoed Jinkee doing a movie and now she has an offer from a Pinoy network to host her own show, sort of an Oprah Winfrey like deal,” one insider told me on Saturday from Las Vegas.
“Manny is not keen on all this and he prefers his First Lady to handle her business interests in Gensan (they own a commercial development which includes Manny’s sports/billiards bar and fashion related stores that she and her sister, Janet, operate). Manny doesn’t mind her having business outside of the home but doesn’t think she should launch a show biz career right now.”
I say this, don’t hate Jinkee because she is rich and gorgeous. Hate her because she’s also extremely bright if you must.
As for Sis Janet, she’s also from the Planet Beautiful.
*********** Anyone who thinks conditioning coach Alex Ariza’s status on Team Pacquiao is shaky, according to the same Inner Circle source, is totally off base.
“I spoke to Megamanny,” the in the know character said, “and Manny said Alex is an untouchable in his boxing operation. Manny is uninformed and apathetic as to Amir Khan canning AA. In other words, Manny doesn’t know and doesn’t care about Team Khan’s troubles.”
Coupled with my recently published column in which “Black Pope” (as journo Granville Ampong cleverly labeled him) Michael Koncz flatly denied rocking the boat on Ariza, I’d say this tempest in a teaport is over and done.
************ Dr. Greg Penilla is a physician and Pacman fan based in St. Louis.
Normally, he doesn’t offer a medical evaluation from far away but, in looking at photos of Pacman’s golf ball sized lump on his right hand, near his wrist, The Good Doctor checked in to say Koncz has been properly informed that it looks like a benign lump which will not jeapoardize Pacquiao’s punching power.
Here’s what the Missouri Medicine Man offered:
“The lump on Manny’s wrist looks like a Ganglion’s cyst. It is a benign cyst. If it is asymptomatic and causes no discomfort or problem it can be left alone. It can also be easily excised in an outpatient setting using local anesthetic. Manny will unlikely have it removed while he is still fighting not unless it causes symptoms or becomes significantly bigger. When he retires, I bet he’ll have it removed for “cosmetic reasons”. In the old days treatment is done by smashing it with a book, usually a bible, thus called, “Bible method”.
Dr. Penilla:
Good info, as always, respected physician.
Here’s my question then.
Could I take a stack of the Oscar de la Hoya owned Ring magazines, maybe 12 issues, and slam on Manny’s wrist and thus remove the unsightly lump?
After all, The Ring has long been called “the Bible of boxing” although Oscar prefers to call it his New Testament.
******** Irrepressible Pinoy boxing maven Hammering Hermie Rivera, former manager of Pinoy world champ Luisito Espinoza, suggested a comedy duo who might appear on any Jinkee-hosted TV program.
“Me and you, Marley, the White Gorilla and WOFO, the Wise, Old Filipino Owl, sort of like a modern day Abbott & Costello. But, Mike, you’re the fat one.”
Have your Pinoy people call mine, Hermie, I get big offers every day that ends in “y.”
You know this.
