Lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez may has by passed a fight with fellow Mexican countryman and fading legend Erik Morales, but that has not kept one of the best fighters in the world from announcing his interest in boxing for a championship in a fourth weight division.
If Marquez (52-5-1, 38 KOs) were to capture a world title as a junior welterweight, it would mark a feat no Mexican has ever accomplished: championships in four weight classes. And to make matters more interesting, Marquez shared his interest in fighting for the International Boxing Federation?s crown at 140 pounds.
?It is up to the promoters,? said Marquez, ?but if it can be arranged I would fight for the IBF?s title.?
Marquez went on to declare he has no ties, or clear cut allegiances to any sanctioning body within the world of boxing.
?I am not tied to any body. Not the Council (World Boxing Council), WBO (World Boxing Organization), WBA (World Boxing Association, or IBF,? said Marquez.
Currently, the International Boxing Federation has no world champion at the junior welterweight limit, but Kaizer Mabuza will fight Zab Judah on March 5th for the vacated crown.
Maybe Marquez is looking forward to fight between the South African Mabuza or American Judah?
At this time Marquez hold the WBO lightweight crown and WBA super lightweight title, but has held titles by all four of the major sanctioning bodies at one time, or another.
