It does not take much to predict the future of certain fighters within the world boxing, and a statement released today by the World Boxing Council’s President Jose Suliman unraveled key insight to the career of up and coming Mexican slugger Saul Alvarez.
Alvarez (35-0-1, 26 KOs) is a recognizable figure in Mexico, who signed a contract with Los Angeles’ Golden Boy Promotions with the hopes of becoming a world class star. Since his signing, it has become evident that there was a lot of hype surrounding Alvarez, but the young man has clear skills deficits in the areas of speed and general athleticism
Golden Boy has been left with a green fighter, high expectations, and the responsibility of guiding his career.
Many fans have wondered when Alvarez will fight for a world title and today Mr. Suliman gave us a strong clue.
In a press release, Sulaiman announced Manny Pacquiao’s release of a 154 pound title he won against Antonio Margarito and Alvarez’s interest in fighting for that crown.
“Saul Alvarez? representatives immediately contacted the WBC to say that they are ready to fight for the title as soon as the WBC states,” announced Suliman.
If the WBC pushed for a fight between the #1 contender (Alvarez) and #2 man (Alfredo Angulo) to crown a new 147 pound champion, it would be a fight that makes sense.
An Alvarez – Angulo fight would pit two Mexicans who put their limited offenses first and stir the imaginations of fight fans. The fight would have to take place in Mexico, where it could be a huge draw, as Angulo is not allowed into the United States due to complicated problems regarding his immigration status.
Angulo (19-1, 16 KOs) who is promoted by Gary Shaw has been inactive for several months due to his inability to enter the United States and rumors have circulated of him sitting out his contract with Shaw to sign with Golden Boy.
Only time will tell if Alvarez’s road to a title will go through Angulo, but it would seem to make sense.
