UNDEFEATED Filipino Rodel Mayol yesterday gained a chance to vie for the World Boxing Council minimumweight title after he scored a spectacular fourth-round technical knockout win over Lorenzo Trejo at the Plaza de Toros, a bullring in Cancun, Mexico.
The fight was one of the featured bouts during the WBC Night of Champions, a gathering of more than 100 past and present WBC world champions in Mexico.
A left hook to the jaw by Mayol sent Trejo, who is managed by three-time world champion Erik Morales, to the canvas in the first round.
After dominating the second and third rounds, Mayol rained blows on Trejo in the fourth round, capped by a left uppercut that sent Trejo down for good at the 2:29 mark.
“It was just amazing,” said an ecstatic Games and Amusements Board chair Eric Buhain, who watched Mayol’s fight at ringside. “The Mexicans really applaud us now, especially after Manny Pacquiao’s win and this one.”
With the win, Mayol, the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) champ who improved to 22-0 with 17 KOs, gained a ticket to challenge WBC champ Eagle Kyowa within the year.
