GL: It’s always a pleasure to chat with you. What can boxing fans look forward to seeing from you on March 12? “Most likely, this will be one of the best fights, if not the best fight of my campaign so far.”
GL: What do you know about Dzinziruk as a fighter and what made you want to fight him?
Sergio Martinez: “He’s a great champion. He’s been a great champion for the last five years and I like the challenge. It motivates me.”
GL: Based on what you’ve seen from Dzinziruk, do you feel he’s a more difficult style than Paul Williams?
SM: “That’s a very good question and nobody has asked me that. I think Paul Williams was not an easy style, I don’t think this fight will be easy either, but after the fight you will get the first interview and I will tell you.”
GL: What does a victory in this fight mean to you?
SM: “In my best moments I will bring a great fight and this fight will be great. Winning is everything to me and I’m not coming to lose.”
GL: What will be the difference in this fight that leads to you getting the victory?
SM: “I’m a better boxer, with better speed. I’m out to show the world and I’m on a mission to show the world that I am the best pound for pound fighter in the world. I was the fighter of the year last year, this year I want to become the best pound for pound. This guy right now is just a steppingstone in my way.”
GL: Will you ever fight below middleweight again?
SM: “Yes, but I can’t go lower than 154.”
GL: Would you only be willing to go to 154 for Pacquiao or Mayweather, or for anybody?
SM: “Mayweather, Pacquiao and Cotto. Nobody else.”
GL: Closing thoughts?
SM: “I want to give a big hug to all of my fans and thank you for the interview.”
