When Zab “Super” Judah asked Floyd Mayweather Jr when he was going to get back into the ring, Floyd responded, “I’m finished.” As the great boxing trainer Freddie Roach once told me, “Floyd marches to a different drum beat, so you can’t really figure the guy out.” This may or may not be the case this time.
If Floyd is indeed finished with boxing, do many people even care anymore? Personally, I hope that he continues to fight because then there will still be the slightest bit of hope that the big fight with Pacquiao could still happen. With that said, Floyd has done so much damage to his reputation and to his legacy that many of the boxing fans have turned on him.
Floyd’s run in’s with the law and his out of the ring issues have damaged his legacy. If he retires from boxing without fighting Manny Pacquiao, he will be remembered as a really good fighter that ducked the current best fighter. Some people have an argument that Floyd is better than Pacquiao, and that’s fine but it doesn’t take away from the fact that Floyd’s legacy has taken a hit.
Pacquiao has a gigantic fan base and it grows every day of the week. He has done just about everything right, and Floyd has done just about everything wrong.
The year 2010 is a year that Floyd would likely like to forget. With the multiple charges filed against him and the YouTube video that surfaced showing Floyd verbally attacking Filipinos, he’s pretty much done damage that is not fixable, as it pertains to his legacy, that is.
Recently it was reported that both Roger and Floyd would avoid any jail time In the meantime 8 division world champion Manny Pacquiao rolls right along He will be gearing up for his fight Vs. Shane Mosley soon. He’s been elected to Congress, and his life could not be any better. Karma?
Mississippians that I spoke to concerning Floyd’s comment to Zab Judah have mixed feelings. I spoke to Rodney Washingtom, a Mayweather fan from Jackson, MS. Rodney still supports Floyd Mayweather and has his fingers crossed that he will not retire, “Man I hope Floyd hangs in there and fights Manny Pacquiao. He needs to shut up all of the Pacquiao fans once and for all, and the best way to do that is to beat down their champion”
That’s easier said than done Mr Washington. I think that I can speak on behalf of most of Manny’s fans here. ‘Just bring it?’
I also spoke to Kyle Dutiel, of Byram, MS who is a Manny Pacquiao fan. When I informed Kyle of what Mayweather told Zab Judah, he simply shrugged his shoulders and said, ” Don’t let the door hit you on the backside on the way out Floyd.”
So will Floyd hit the door and not look back, or will he come back around and fight? I for one hope that he still fights.
