Filipino lightweight prospect Mercito Gesta (20-0-1, 10 KOs) returns to action on a Don Chargin promoted event in San Francisco on Friday, February 18 and broadcast via Spanish language network Telefutura’s Solo Boxeo.
Though Gesta’s opponent has not been finalized, it is an opportunity for Californians to watch one of boxing’s blue chip prospects live and in person. Tickets are moving quickly, but can be purchased here.
I was able to catch-up with the San Diego based Gesta on Monday night as he settled into Los Angeles, where he will finish-up training camp at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym.
How is everything going?
Gesta: Great, I am looking forward to working hard at The Wild Card and putting on a great show in San Francisco.
What are the advantages of working at Roach’s gym?
Gesta: The high level of sparring. I’ll get in the type of work which just is not available anywhere else. I hope to work with Rashad Holloway and Paulie Malignaggi in the coming days.
You were active in 2010 against some veterans, what does 2011 have in store for you?
Gesta: I am ready to fight the best at lightweight, be it “Bam Bam” Rios, Michael Katsidis, or Vicente Escobedo
Who is the most dangerous in that group?
Gesta: Probably Rios, I want to fight the best.
Did Christmas and New Years disrupt your training?
Gesta: (laughing) No, I would do my roadwork and training, even if there was a part the night before.
You’ll be fighting in front of a lot of Filipinos in San Francisco, are you anxious?
Gesta: I want to put on an exciting fight, no matter if they are Filipino or not. I want all fans of the sport to enjoy fights.
Your building a reputation as an aggressive fighter, do you enter the ring looking for a knock-out.
Gesta: Yes, I always want to end my fights by stopping my opponents. Sometimes it does not happen, but it is always my goal.
