Everything that was disappointing about Timothy Bradley?s head butt-shortened victory Saturday over Devon Alexander was the loser?s fault. The 140-pound WBC/WBO title unification bout went to the scorecards in the 10th round, with Bradley leading 97-93, 96-95 and 98-93. Maybe there was nothing the southpaw Alexander (21-1) could have done about the inevitable clashes of noggins in righty-lefty bouts, ?We didn?t work on no head butts,? Alexander said. ?We worked on boxing his head off with skills.? But Alexander was ineffectual on that front, too. ?He didn?t stop me from using my skills,? Alexander insisted. Then Alexander must have stopped himself. Bradley (27-0) was the aggressor and landed all of the percussive power shots in the fight, which took place at a neutral site, the Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich. Alexander landed as many punches as Bradley, but none with any juice. He didn?t really stick or move. Bradley felt he would have been outpointed had he not been rather more aggressive than normal so that Alexander ?didn?t have time to think in there. He?ll box you to pieces.? Bradley consistently worked his way inside for body punches. His power shots were equally convincing. But surprisingly superior footwork was the No. 1 reason the Californian seemed to be outscoring Alexander in every category. The only dancing Alexander did was to Bradley?s tune. The head-butting was mutual, but the one that ended the bout was clearly Bradley?s doing, albeit accidental as ruled. It was every bit a Timothy Bradley fight, and Alexander was powerless to do even nearly enough about it.
