As Manny Pacquiao is scheduled to take on Shane Mosley on May 7, many boxing fans are already looking past the bout as they continue to hope that the most coveted fight in the sport will come to fruition.
The most vocal of Pacquiao’s fans seem totally convinced that Floyd Mayweather Jr. would literally run to the ends of the earth to avoid the clash, and that his fear of facing the reigning pound for pound king is the reason that the two haven’t already signed on the dotted line.
Mayweather fans blame Pacquiao for not agreeing to fully random, Olympic style blood testing, thus causing the failure of previous negotiations. There have been numerous conflicting reports as to whether or not Pacquiao did or did not agree to the testing without a cutoff.
One thing that everybody agrees on is the fact that a fight between the two top fighters in the sport would be monumental. The sheer magnitude of the match, the public outcry and the millions of dollars that it would generate all seem to add up to make it an eventuality.
Fellow Examiner Michael Marley went on record today to state that the bout is ?sure to happen?.
Back in June of last year, Jeff Mayweather told me that he was ?very pessimistic? that the fight would be made at that time.

However, Mayweather now feels that there is a possibility that the fight will eventually come through.
On Thursday night, I asked him via text message if he thinks the fight will be made later this year.
?It’s hard to say, but I think maybe one day it will happen,? Mayweather replied.
When I inquired about drug testing, Mayweather said; ?That’s the only issue that killed the fight?.
Considering all that is at stake, I believe that the two pugilists will eventually come to an agreement. It’s just too big not to happen.
Cliff Garrigus of Rogers: ?I think eventually it has to happen if they both continue to box. I’m not sure on Floyd’s motives anymore. I think at this point he is trying to hype it up for a huge payday because I really think if Pacquiao beats him, he’ll retire.?
Pro boxer Delray Raines of Paris: ?I’m really not sure if it will happen or not since they have already drug it out this far. If they do fight, I can’t even say who will win.?
Michael Mayo of Springdale: ?If it ever happens, there’s no doubt it will be the most exciting fights in years. I think both fighters will be in top shape. Mayweather may be the the villain of boxing, but he no slouch when it comes to performing in the ring. I’m a fan of professional boxing, and both Pacquiao and Mayweather are professionals when they step into the ring.?
Jason Harris of Garfield: “I cannot wait until this fight happens. It will bring me back to the days when i was a kid, when it was Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran, or Hagler vs. Hearns. Those were historic fights that all boxing fans remember. This fight could be one for the ages. I will say this, if Floyd and Pac bring it like we all hope they will, it will be a fight for the ages.”
