One of boxing’s true icons reared his electrified head again, to the dismay of boxing fans.
It was reported today that Bob Arum was being seduced by Don King regarding a potential bout between his fighter, Ricardo Mayorga and pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao – a bout nobody could of conceptualized, but King, and a suggestion fans do not want to hear.
The pair of veteran promoters were in New York to hype a battle between Mayorga, and the Arum promoted Miguel Cotto on March 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada; the first time the boxing giants have worked together in 5 years.
Now King would like to do continued business with the powerful and well-positioned Arum and his cash cow Pacquiao.
Mayorga was granted a bout with the rebounding Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto after returning to the ring following a twenty-seven month lay-off and defeating Michael Walker this past December.
His bout with Cotto has been highly criticized, due Mayorga’s extended absence from the sport and poor record in his most recent high profile fights, but King is trying to do what he does best, leverage his resources into the highest revenue opportunities possible.
A victory against Cotto would aide the Nicaraguan fighter in landing a fight with Pacquiao, but Mayorga is a six to one underdog to win the battle with Cotto.
It is doubtful Mayorga will get a shot at Pacquiao, who is scheduled to fight another boxing retread, Shane Mosley, on May 7, yet in boxing’s theatre of the absurd one can expect the unexpected.
