MANILA, Philippines – The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) is giving a remorseful Charly Suarez a second chance to prove himself after apologizing for his belated return to training camp and promising to make up for this shortcoming.
Suarez missed by two weeks the ABAP?s standing order to get back to the gym last Jan. 3 due to pressing matters, which prompted the association to demote the Davaoe?o pug to Class A from its Super Elite category.
Another member of the Super Elite group, Annie Albania, has been dropped from the Phl team altogether for her failure to return to training and inform ABAP of her plan to take a respite from boxing after her silver-medal performance in the Asian Games.
Suarez, according to ABAP president Ricky Vargas and executive director Ed Picson, will have to shoot his way back up the Super Elite category, ABAP?s upper echelon of boxers.
?We had a long chat with Charly and he recognizes the mistake for coming to work late. Let?s see how he works outside the elite program. He?ll have to work his way up to the elite program again. Tinanggap naman niya at iyon ang kagandahan,? Vargas said during yesterday?s PSA Forum.
?Charly was very remorseful. He apologized for not informing right away of his late return from vacation. He pledged to work his way up to his previous status (elite) and promised to be more focused,? Picson added.
Because of the incident, Suarez was also placed on probation as beneficiary of security firm G4S? G4S 4teen sports sponsorship program for the 2012 Olympics.
?He will stay under sponsorship but probationary for three months. Like a good person and a good man, he took accountability for it, he said he will work his way up,? Vargas said.
As for Albania, the ABAP considers the 28-year-old lady pug ?retired.?
?I think looking back, Annie quit even before she made her statements. She made that decision for many reasons, one of that is personal,? said Vargas.
?I?d like to say Annie has served the country well; she has done very well. She just needs to get her priorities and has chosen to concentrate on other priorities. We wish her well,? he added.
