Assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez is one of the people who is closest to eight-division titlist Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 knockouts), who is also holder of both the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) and junior middleweight (154 pounds) belts.
But as FanHouse discovered from Top Rank Promotions CEO, Bob Arum (pictured above), Fernandez also has served as a former body guard to Pacquiao’s Philippines’ protege, WBA interim super flyweight (115 pounds) titlist Nonito Donaire (25-1, 17 KOs).
On Feb. 19 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, an HBO-televised clash will feature Donaire against WBO and WBC bantamweight (118 pounds) king Fernando Montiel (44-2-2, 34 KOs) of Mexico.
Arum considers Donaire to be the No. 2 fighter from the Philippines behind Pacquiao, who has a May 7 defense of WBO belt opposite three-division, five-time titlist Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KOs) that is slated for the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.
