Casual talk from Biltmore Hotel, Los Angeles, California – The conversationally vibrant boxer-turned political crusader, Nonito Donaire, Jr., who has become an ardent supporter of the Aquino Movement even before the days of the last presidential elections, joined his foe, Fernando Montiel of Mexico, for press conference of their scheduled fight on February 19 for the WBO/WBC Bantamweight championship at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Donaire, Jr. said he would continue his campaign to support the current Aquino Administration. On August 15, 2009, he dedicated his arguous fight against Rafael Concepcion of Panama to former President Corazon ‘Cory’ Aquino who passed away a few days before. He even wore yellow trunks, the trademark color as a way of paying tribute to her.
Donaire said he “will fight in the ring to give his estranged father, Nonito Donaire, Sr., the honor he deserves who has made what he is today, a boxing champion, and at best, his God and country”. He also acknowledges what the leaders, like boxer-turned politician Manny Pacquiao and Cory Aquino, did for the Philippines.
“She has fought, just like her sign ‘Laban,’ which means fight. She always had that fight and love for the country to just get it to another level. I just have great respect for the late former president. It’s my way to pay her tribute and give my respects to her,? he said about the icon of Philippine democracy, the mother of the incumbent President.
“And Pacquiao became great not just because of his performance in the ring but also because of what he did to his country and his faith in God.”
As noted, Donaire, Jr. got a phone call from President Simeon Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, Jr. immediately after he won his bout against Herna ‘Tyson’ Marquez in the 8th round by TKO.
