On Friday night in Fairfield, California, undefeated middleweight prospect Brandon Gonzales squared off against tough southpaw Lester Gonzalez.
Brandon Gonzales, who is trained by Jeff Mayweather, came out and established his jab early. He also embarked on a vicious body-attack campaign, landing thundering shots that would have sent lesser
opposition to the canvas in short order.
At one minute into Rnd. 6, one powerful right hook to the body knocked Lester Gonzalez off balance, and into the ropes.
Throughout the 8-round battle, Lester Gonzalez exhibited very good pugilistic skills of his own, repeatedly catching his undefeated foe with well-timed counter-punches, and proving himself to be a worthy opponent.
Despite entering the fight with a 71% knockout rate, Brandon Gonzales boxed patiently, efficiently and intelligently, instead of looking for a one-punch knockout.
On Saturday morning, Jeff Mayweather commented via text message about the clever adaptations made by Gonzales during the fight.
” Well, I think Brandon made the adjustment from puncher to boxer. Once he realized the guy wasn’t going anywhere, he went to plan B – boxing,” Mayweather said.
The judges scored the fight 79-73, 78-74 and 78-74, giving Brandon Gonzales the UD, and improving his record to 14-0, with 10 KOs.
“Brandon actually won very easily,” Mayweather said. “I felt that Lester might have won one round, but it was still a good test for us.”
