After fighting once during a span of two years, thirty-seven year old boxing bad boy Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KOs) will be facing off with the World Boxing Association junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KOs) on March 12, 2011in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout is scheduled to be broadcast on pay per view within the United States.
One would think that an crack at Cotto would be enough for Mayorga, but the Nicaraguan fighter looks at Cotto as just a hurdle before he gets his hands on the world’s pound for pound best fighter Manny Pacquiao.
“Pacquiao better get ready, because I am going after him,” said Mayorga in comments to Nicaraguan newspaper El Nuevo Diario.
After returning to the ring Friday night and scoring a TKO victory over journeyman Michael Walker, defeating a world-class fighter like Cotto would seem a long shot, and even if successful, the opportunity to face Pacquiao would seem unlikely.
Cotto returns to the ring following a June victory over Yuri Foreman and if he were to defeat Mayorga, a rematch with Antonio Margarito, or Pacquiao is a distinct possibility.
No official statements has been made regarding the bout by Cotto’s promotional representatives at Top Rank, but a news conference to announce the event should be held in the next few days.
