GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Just like in his past triumphs, Manny Pacquiao, the illustrious son of this bustling city, will be given a red carpet welcome when he arrives here either Saturday or Sunday.
This time though it would be bigger, and perhaps more elegant.
This was promised yesterday by General Santos City Mayor Pedro Acharon, Jr. following Pacquiao’s smashing victory over Mexican legend Erik Morales in a grudge rematch Sunday in Las Vegas.
“We have laid a red carpet for the arrival here of Manny Pacquiao either on Saturday or Sunday from the airport reception, followed by a motorcade, press conference and a thanskgiving dinner,” said Acharon, who once accompanied Pacquiao in one of his bouts in the US and considers the boxer his friend.
As approved by the City Council, any sports champion like Pacquaio who brings honor and glory to General Santos City, will receive a token prize of R30,000.
But that amount is expected to be distributed by Pacquiao to this city’s poor families which is his practice.
“Truly, Manny Pacquiao displayed the ability and courage of a General to beat his arch rival,” said Acharon.
Another friend of Pacquiao, Mayor Labualas “Samrod” Mamansual of Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat, said he was happy that Pacman won as this gives honor to the country and an inspiration to the Filipino youth to aspire the same.
“I’m very happy for my friend Manny Pacquiao because his win gives moral value to the Filipinos. He has done his best in his great battle to give honor to his homeland,” said Mamansual, a former Moro rebel leader.
