A third fight with Manny Pacquiao stalled during early stages of negotiations for lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez, but that did not keep him from expressing his views on the worthiness of Pacquiao’s future foe.
No official word has been provided, but most insiders believe Pacquiao will be facing veteran Shane Mosley on May 7, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mosley has dominated most news clippings in regards to Pacquiao’s next opponent, but early on in the decision making process the name of Andre Berto was being tossed around as a viable option.
In the eyes of Marquez, Berto is a worthier opponent that Mosley.
“I think the best option would be for him to face Berto,” Marquez stated during his weekly appearance on ESPN Deportes Golpe a Golpe show. “Mosley is on the decline, he has not looked good in his last two fights.”
Mosley fought twice during 2010, having lost to Floyd Mayweather Junior by a wide decicion, and drawing with Sergio Mora in a forgetful pay per view affair.
And though Marquez believes Berto deserves an opportunity, he doubts the undefeated fighter could defeat Pacquiao.
“Berto’s style of boxing is a bit mechanical, slow, and orthodox,” said Marquez. “Berto would have a difficult time with Pacquiao’s speed.”
Official word on Pacquiao’s May 7 opponent will be announced in the days to come.
