Boxeo Mundial caught up with Chief Trainer Robert Garcia to discuss the showdown between Fernando Montiel (44-2-2-34KOs) and Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire (25-1-17KOs). “Montiel is a tough guy, and he brings a lot to the table. I haven’t had the chance to study him yet and form a game plan. But Nonito is just going through guys right now” Stated Garcia. Donaire made quick work in his last fight scoring a very impressive 4th round knock out earlier this month which marked the third fight under the guidance of Garcia. Things are peaking at the right time between Garcia and Donaire which was evident as Team Donaire executed the perfect game plan which had Donaire executing his money punch (hook) clean and crisp. Timing is everything in boxing and the heading into the biggest fight of his career the timing couldn’t be any better.
This fight has all the makings of “fight of the year” especially after the fact that just one week after Donaire’s impressive KO victory, Montiel answered the bell and sent a message right back when he scored an impressive KO victory of his own by stopping a very game Jovanny “Bambino” Soto” in the 2nd round and followed up the victory sending a simple message “I am ready for Donaire”. It would be hard to favor one fighter over the other as both of these fighters are so evenly matched, I think Robert Garcia said it best “Its going to be a war”.
