Lewkowicz Talks Martinez vs Chavez Jr., Alvarez, Pacquiao

Martinez won’t fight Pacquiao at welterweight insists Lewkowicz. By James Blears

Sampson Lewkowicz, the adviser of WBC middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez, explains that a fight with pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao isn’t on the cards, because the weight difference can’t be bridged or budged.

At the WBC offices in Mexico City, Sampson told BoxingScene.com:

“Sergio Martinez is much bigger, and Manny is too smart. He will not go for that. He’s very strong and powerful but it’s another division, and he doesn’t want to burn the bridge. I believe that Freddie Roach says he wants them (Sergio and Manny) to fight at 147 pounds.

“I responded in a sarcastic way replying that we’ll fight David Haye at 175 pounds, which means the same thing, and then the winner’ll get Klitschko!”

Sampson also discounted the prospect of Sergio Martinez fighting Julio Chavez Jr. or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez any time soon. He stressed:

“Canelo is a great fighter, and Mexico needs Canelo. Mexico also needs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. They don’t need Martinez, and Martinez doesn’t need either one…yet. In a couple of years we can think about it. But at the moment, let them do their work and be safe.”

Sampson also said he wouldn’t personally like to see Chavez Jr. fighting Canelo, explaining:

“It’s better to have two great champions, rather than just one.”
