Stop me if you’ve read this boxing headline any more than, let’s say, 30 to 40 times…
JOAN GUZMAN FAILS TO MAKE WEIGHT!
Oops, it happened against to the seemingly cursed “Dominican Dandy” Friday at the MGM Grand Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas, where as part of the Marcos Maidana-Amir Khan undercard, Golden Boy was attempting to resusicitate Guzman’s sadly dwindling career.
Guzman, lately claiming a thyroid problem has caused his weight travails, came in at 144 pounds for a contracted for 140 pound bout against someone named Jason Davis.
Guzman owns a checkered 30-0-1, 17 knockouts record which includes two world championships.
Davis has an 11-7-1 pro log.
Davis was himself overweight at 141 so both camps agreed to forget the contract issue and keep the prelim bout on schedule.
“This time they can’t blame Guzman, nobody seemed to be upset,” earnest manager Jose Nunez said by phone. “Golden Boy did not seem upset. The bout was on and off, on and off, about eight times so I don’t see how they blame Guzman.”
Guzman previously came in too heavy for important world title bouts on both Showtime and HBO.
Recently retired Nate Campbell and Ali Funeka can tell you all about it.
So now Guzman is, I guess, a welterweight. A very shot one but a welterweight…
Just a half pound more and he’ll weigh as much as Manny Pacquiao did for his Nov. 13 bout against Antonio Margarito.
The now age 34 Guzman and weightmaking credibility, two things that do not go together.
It’s a shame considering the awesome talent he has or at least had.
