In recent times, when Manny Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum sit down to discuss the Filipino stars next opponent, the process becomes a theatre of the absurd.
After his one-sided walloping of Antonio Margarito, Pacquiao is once again on the hunt for new prey. Today, from Mexico, old foe Erik Morales threw his name into the discussion.
Promoting his December 18 fight against Jorge Barrios, Morales told the Mexican media that he wants to step-up his level of competition next year after having some soft touches during his comeback in 2010.
“I asked for a year to work with good fighters, but not the best,” said Morales. “Next year, 2011 we are going to go after the best.”
Morales’ father, Jose, then dropped Pacquiao’s name as someone they are setting their sites on.
“If they cannot fine Manny Pacquiao an opponent, here is Erik Morales,” said Jose. “I see Pacquiao as being exactly the same and Erik is becoming more mature and versitile as a boxers every day.”
Morales has already fought Pacquiao three times, giving him his last defeat back in 2005 via a 12 round unanimous, but then was knocked-out twice in the following rematches.
Campaigning as a junior welterweight, it is unlikely Pacquiao would scale down to the 140 pound limit or give Morales an opportunity at a higher weight class.
