Seemingly lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez cannot get Manny Pacquiao and his two let downs against the pound for pound champion off of his mind.
A look at boxing’s record book shows that Juan Manuel Marquez has a split-decision loss and a draw against Manny Pacquiao, while suffering four knock-downs along the way.
None the less, many figures inside the sport and Marquez himself believe he deserved victories in those two fight and he could still give the Filipino champion a great fight.
With Pacquiao in the after-math of a destructive victory against Antonio Margarito, Marquez gave his thoughts on a possible third fight with Pacquiao during a weekly appearance on ESPN Deportes’ Golpe a Golpe.
“If my promoter [Golden Boy] and his promoter [Top Rank] can reach an agreement, lets move on with this fight, ” said Marquez.
In the midst of training for a November 27 clash with Michael Katsidis, Marquez believes a fight between himself and Pacquiao is what the boxing world wants.
“My priority is that third fight [with Pacquiao], but it is not just my priority, it is the priority of Mexican fans, Filipino fans, and of all boxing fans.”
Pacquiao weighed in at 144 and a half pounds for his fight against Margarito, while Marquez seems most comfortable within the limit of the 135 pound limit of the lightweight division. Regardless of technicalities such as weight, the Mexican seems to believe he has the formula to defeat Pacquiao.
“Pacquiao is a strong fighter, ” said Marquez. “His speed is incredible and he has respectable punching power. I believe in our first two fights I have proved that if you fight him at the same rhythm, same speed, providing counter-punches, and using side to side movement, you can beat him. I have demonstrated it on two occasions.”
