Just a few thoughts about last Saturday; you think Antonio Margarito would have knocked the ?Pac-Man? out with that same body shot he caught him with along the ropes in round six if the date would have been, let?s say, July 25, 2008. You just have to wonder why those thudding shots didn?t take as much out of Pacquiao like they did when Margarito landed one on the following names, Golden Johnson, Kermit Cintron, and Miguel Cotto. All of those fights occurred after ?Margacheato? (yeah, I went there) lost out on the original summer of 2007 date with Cotto, due to his loss to Paul Williams. A fight and mega-payday that he saw go to Zab Judah.
Come on people; if Felix Trinidad could be accused of cheating (and he never was caught with any illegal padding), why wouldn?t you firmly believe that Margarito knew that he was cheating, in order to make up for the fact that he was one more loss from boxing oblivion. It wasn?t like Floyd Mayweather was going to fight him prior to the Paul Williams fight anyway.
Plus, I actually felt bad for a second, since I met Margarito?s handlers in Puerto Rico in 2004 when he fought on the undercard of Cotto vs. Kelson Pinto. His manager, Sergio Diaz and I shared dinner both before and after his fight that night with Daniel Santos and they were truly nice people. It?s something I don?t believe has changed. No one can judge or really be aware of what occurred but I?m just saying if you picked up your girl from her friend?s house and she just had a hoodie and bra on with no shirt, what would you think went down before you picked her up?
What was Miguel Cotto feeling when he saw what Margarito?s face looked like after Pacquiao laid gloves on him? All I can say is?BOOM!
As for the pound-for-pound king?s next move, everyone knows the answer to this. If that fight doesn?t happen, there will always be a fresh young lion who wants his crack at the king of the jungle. I have a feeling that we will be in for a long vacation when it comes to the ?Pac-Man.? If not, great. At least we can watch one of the two best fighters in the world (and of this generation) continue to do what he does best.
Honestly, I?ve said it once and I?ll say it again. Only one fighter out there has the speed of hand, foot, and mind to equal Pacquiao offensively and defensively, while not engaging in a brutal war that he knows he can?t win. He simply is not strong enough. I?m up for watching them exchange well-placed accurate bomb after bomb on each other in a brutal display of high speed chess. Ugh?until that day.
