Pacquiao Vs Margarito: When Do You Know Its Too Much? Though Manny Pacquiao defeated Antonio Margarito convincingly last week, the post mortem continues to be done with precision. In the aftermath of Pacquiao?s victory, what has been forgotten is that the fight was not stopped mid way though it was clear the bout being a mismatch.
If it had been done so, Margarito could have been saved from a lot of punishment he received at the hands of Pacquiao.
But, Pacquiao should not be blamed for the thrashing he inflicted on Margarito. He asked the referee to stop the fight. After the fight, Pacquiao had said, “My opponent looked bad. I wanted him to stop it. I said, ‘look at his face. ‘ I didn’t want to damage him permanently. That’s not what boxing’s all about.”
As it is widely known, a fight can be stopped midway if the ringside doctor doesn?t allow a fighter to continue due to injuries suffered during the bout. Besides, if the fight is a sanctioned one, it can be stopped if its clear that the bout is uneven or mismatched. But, despite the bout being sanctioned by the WBC and the local boxing commission, this was not done.
Coming to Margarito, he continued to receive punishment from Pacquiao and refused to quit in order to stick to his Mexican nature and was too proud to do so. Boxers, generally, don?t quit. Take the example of Shannon Briggs who similarly got beaten for twelve rounds or the case of Alfonso Gomez until a referee came to his rescue. But after this fight, Margarito would be remembered more for the twelve round beating he got from Pacquiao and not for his illegal hand wraps.
