THE SWEETEST thing that’s going to happen tonight is the honoring of the best athletes of 2003 at the Manila Pavilion. There’s no sweeter feeling for an athlete than to be feted by our nation’s sportswriters, who are the supposed masters as far as judging the year’s best of the best is concerned.
Manny Pacquiao grabs the spotlight for the second straight year as Athlete of the Year, sharing it this time with world bowling champion CJ Suarez. Last year, Pacquiao shared the top plum with Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski, the Asian Games equestrienne gold medalist in Busan.
OK, about last year.
While Mikee arrived wrapped in her usual boundless humility, Pacquiao, besides the sad fact that he stood the sportswriters up, gave an alibi for his non-appearance that was as shallow as the mindset of someone I know trying to manage (mismanage?) the NBN.
Naturally, Pacquiao’s snub wounded feelings, myself included.
