After speaking to others and my own intuition, I’m believing the upcoming Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito fight hasn’t captured a buzz yet among local sports fans which would equal likely ticket sales.
Promoter Top Rank says its tracking of ticket sales shows they are ahead of the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight back in March.
I’m hoping Top Rank is correct and they reach their goal of 60,000 sales.
One difference between this promotion and the previous one is in marketing.
While it might not seem like much, Antonio Margarito will make a guest appearance in Dallas on Sunday at a tamale festival. Then he travels to Fort Worth a couple of hours later for an open to the public workout at a Latino shopping mall.
For the promotion back in March, all events attended by the fighters were held at the host hotel, The Gaylord Resort in Grapevine.
Maybe this relaxing of the rules will inspire ticket sales and media interest in the fight.
Some say Jerry isn’t talking much about the fight as his Cowboys are struggling through a 1-6 season and attention toward the fight would show he has time and attention conflicts.
If the fight does poorly at the gate, would it necessarily be the end of big time boxing in Dallas?
No. In fact Dallas might have done Las Vegas a favor by taking this fight off its hands. But the Cowboys might be careful in planning a future event during their off season.
The Cowboys are struggling, and they are putting on a Super Bowl in February. A good crowd November 13 would be a result of hard work and determination by Jerry Jones and his staff in association with Bob Arum’s Top Rank.
