Members of the ALA Promotions boxing stable in Cebu are, technically-wise better, boxers. But it is time to alter and make drastic, if not revolutionary changes, in their training regimen.
Not a few noticed how ALA boxers are fading late in the rounds and got winded before they know what hit them.
Z Gorres, AJ Banal, Jimrex Jaca and Boomboom Bautista are but few of its boxers that had all the makings of becoming world champions but almost always fell short. Gorres was ALA?s saddest case. Gorres was a fine technical boxer with above average punching power until he ran out of gas in his last fight. Gorres won but collapsed while on his way to the dressing room. Only the advance medical attention given by American hospitals saved Gorres from coming home dead. Gorres will never fight again.
AJ Banal is another case of a superior boxer with likeable power whose latest fight, along with the knockout loss to Rafael Concepcion, was excruciatingly painful to watch for avid followers.
ALA boxers cannot seem to pace themselves or are simply too confident of knockout wins they forget not all fights end up in stoppage.
As you climb the ladder in boxing, your opponents get tougher and more durable. You have to treat every fight as a 15 round affair and know when to go for the knockout. Knockouts do not always come in the early rounds unless you are fed with patsies and trail and trial horses.
Edito Villamor, the chief trainer of ALA Promotions, was a fine flyweight boxer too during his younger years. Too bad, he ran into Ricardo Lopez, one of the few world champions to retire undefeated.
Edito needs to retool and re-invent himself as a trainer. His wards are still young. He should give equal premium to building stamina and endurance to his boxers.
Yes, you will have to outbox or out power your foe to win in boxing. But you have to do it 12 rounds if necessary. You won?t lose your power by building up your stamina but you certainly lose power when you ran out of steam.
