
Contrary to popular belief, there are other gyms that host a plethora of world-class talent other than the now world famous Wild Card Boxing Club, which is the stateside home of Manny Pacquiao and his trainer, Freddie Roach. And contrary to popular belief, this writer does frequent those other gyms (but, hey, you’ll have to indulge me here as the Wild Card is just a few minutes from my home in Koreatown. You know what they say about location, location, location).
I do have to admit; I have been a bit negligent in dropping by the other gyms recently. I saw some Twitter postings from Frank Espinoza Jr. (@espinozaboxing), where he detailed the exploits of Abner Mares and Carlos Molina- both members of the high-flyin’ Espinoza Boxing Club- at the Azteca Boxing Club earlier this week. And since we’re in the last few days of this interminably long dead period in boxing, I decided it was long overdue for me to make my rounds.
Besides, the Azteca Boxing Club is just several miles from my offices in Montebello. And you know what? That’s my job as a boxing writer. It’s very simple; if you live in a fertile area like Los Angeles and you are lucky enough to do this full-time, if you cover the sport by only participating in conference calls, media days and watching on TV- you’re being lazy and doing a half-ass job at covering this sport.
