No easy return for Malinga

Vusi Malinga returns to action after 13 months of inactivity when he meets Michael Domingo in Mafikeng on Saturday night.

Malinga and the Filipino meet at the Mafikeng University Hall in an eliminator for the IBF bantamweight title.

The belt is held by Yhonny Perez, who won the vacant title when he stopped South African Silence Mabuza.

Malinga, a southpaw with a record of 19-3-1, including 12 knockouts, is rated at No 9 by the IBF.

The 31-year-old Domingo (46-14-2; 18) is an experienced campaigner who is rated No 6 by the IFB.

He made his professional debut in November 1999 and in July 2008 won the vacant WBO Oriental bantamweight title when he knocked out Rivo Renkung in the second round.

In his first defence, he stopped Ratanachai Singwancha, who had a record of 73-10 at the time, in the ninth round.

Domingo relinquished the title and last year defeated Monico Laurente on points over ten rounds and Jose Navarro by tko in the eighth.

In his most recent fight, in May this year, he knocked out Luis Melendez (26-5-1) in the second round.

Malinga, 31, a former SA and WBC International bantamweight champion, has had only three fights since November 2007.

On June 12, 2008 he scored an impressive fourth-round stoppage win over Veeraphol Sahaprom in Thailand in a WBC bantamweight title eliminator.

However, in his next fight, in March last year, he failed badly when challenging for the WBC bantamweight belt. Hozumi Hasegawa stopped him in 2 minute 37 seconds of the first round.

In September last year he knocked Tanzanian Fadhili Majia in the third round.

Malinga is a skilful fighter but will have to be at his best to beat the experienced Domingo.

BUMPER UNDERCARD

Branco Milenkovic, of Branco Sports Promotions, has provided a bumper undercard with four former ?world? champions in action.

Phillip Ndou (32-4; 31) a former SA and World Boxing Union champion, faces a Zimbabwean, Bhekimpilo Mlilo, who has a reported record of 9-5-4, in a welterweight fight scheduled for eight rounds.

Ndou lost on points to Lovemore Ndou in a challenge for the IBO welterweight belt in his most recent fight.

Isaac Hlatshwayo (29-2-1, with one no-contest and ten stoppage wins), meets Nkululeko Mhlongo from KwaZulu-Natal in an eight-round welterweight clash. Mhlongo has a reported record of 13-1.

Hlatshwayo has held the SA and IBO lightweight belts and the IBO and IBF welterweight belts. He would like to get his career back on track after a poor performance against Jan Zaveck who stopped him in the third round to take over his IBF belt.
