Juan Manuel Marquez is one of the greatest fighters ever from Mexico, he’s the best fighter from that country today and he’s the fighter who has given Manny Pacquiao fits in two fights.
But all Marquez has to show for two fine performances against Pacquiao is a draw and a split-decision defeat. The draw was tough for him to take because he miraculously got up from three first-round knockdowns to earn it.
The loss, which came nearly four years later in March 2008, was even more difficult to swallow as there were more than a few reporters who thought Marquez won. Marquez and his handlers afterward cried robbery.
In spite of all his accomplishments that will land him in the International Boxing Hall of Fame, it’s clear Marquez won’t be satisfied until he gets another shot at Pacquiao and beats him.
“Obviously, everybody knows the fight I want is Pacquiao,” Marquez said during a conference call promoting his Nov. 27 lightweight title defense against Michael Katsidis at MGM Grand in Las Vegas (on HBO).
