ZAMBOANGA City. ? Ageless wonder Gerry Pe?alosa led the Filipino boxers? three-bout sweep of their foreign counterparts in Sunday?s “Golpe Golpe na Zamboanga: The Last Hurrah” at the Zamboanga City Coliseum.
Pe?alosa, the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight champion, decked Thailand?s Yodsaenkeng Kietmangmee for good with a strong right uppercut to the abdomen in the fourth round.
The “Fearless” former two division world champion dedicated his win to Z “The Dream” Gorres, whose boxing career ended when he had brain injury in 2009 after his Las Vegas fight against Colombian Luis Melendez. Pe?alosa wants to help Gorres in his medical expenses.
This was supposed to be Pe?alosa?s last fight in a historic career spanning two decades that saw him win titles in practically all of boxing?s alphabet soup organizations. But after his victory, Golden Boy Oscar dela Hoya called to congratulate him and invited him for another fight at Staples Center this coming December.
Pe?alosa, who is known to be dela Hoya?s favorite boxer, might face Mexican Abner Mares or Puerto Rican Eric Morel.
Jimrex Jaca and Michael Fare?as made it a clean sweep by notching TKO wins against their Korean opponents.
“The Executioner” Jaca (31-6-3 with 16 KOs) made Korean Jong-Yoon Choi?s (6-1-0 with 2 knockouts) nose bleed profusely, forcing the referee to stop the fight during the 6th round.
On the other hand, World Professional Boxing Federation featherweight champion Fare?as beat Jung-Hoon Kim only 1.30 seconds into the first round where the Korean went down thrice because of the Pinoy boxer?s powerful punches.
In the undercard fights, Marvin Mabait of Zamboanga City beat Rodel
Veronique of General Santos City in a TKO only 30 seconds into Round 1 while Ren-Ren Ruiz from Pe?alosa?s stable was unanimously declared winner against Jhon Ray Lausa in the fourth round. Kid Ventual from Zambo knocked Brobro Lanquido out in the third round.
