If Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30KOs) is able to get past Alfonso Gomez on December 4 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum tells the Orange County Register that fight with WBA junior middleweight Miguel Cotto will be next, likely in March 2011.
They were going to fight on the December date, but there were scheduling conflicts. Chavez’s trainer Freddie Roach is in the Philippines training Manny Pacquiao for his upcoming fight with Antonio Margarito in November and he will also be training Amir Khan for his December fight with Marcos Maidana. Chavez wanted a training camp where he received the necessary attention. Cotto will sit out until the Chavez fight.
“If he wins this fight I’m going to put him in against Miguel Cotto,” promoter Bob Arum said. “Cotto’s still a terrific fighter and he won’t be intimidated by the Ch?vez name. Is Julio ready for a challenge like that? I don’t know.”
