With a proposed December fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Junior nixed, the World Boxing Association (WBA) 154 pound champion Miguel Cotto will sit out the rest of 2010 and possibly fight the winner of Manny Pacquiao – Antonio Margarito in 2011.
In an interview with Puerto Rican news daily Primera Hora, Cotto would not publicly confirm his intent to pursue revenge bouts with Pacquiao or Margarito, but only said the following regarding their November bout, ?the whole world is paying attention to what could happen that night.?
Cotto?s only two losses as a professional have been knock-outs at the hands of Margarito and Pacquiao. All three men are promoted by Top Rank, thus cutting any thick political tape in the way of a bout, and Pacquiao – Margarito are fighting for the World Boxing Council (WBC) title, thus making a future fight with Cotto a unification bout.
When the books close on the 2010 boxing calendar, Cotto will have only fought once – with the Puerto Rican stopping Yuri Foreman within nine rounds.
Juan Carlos Gomez hunting Klitschko
Heavyweight also-ran ?The Black Panther? Juan Carlos Gomez announced today that his sights are set on a fight with International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) Champion Wladmimir Klitschko.
The Cuban made his annoucement as Klitschko looks for a December 11th opponent.
?I am not sure what Klitschko is looking for,? said Gomez. ?If Wladimir wants a real challenge, I am right here.?
Gomez was knocked out by Wladimir?s older brother and WBC champion Vitali in 2009 and has railed off four consecutive victories since the set back.
Alvarez vs. Chavez continues to simmer
Up and coming Mexican superstar Saul ?Canelo Alvarez is more than ready to challenge fellow Mexican hopeful Julio Cesar Chavez Junior.
?I?ll fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Junior,? said Alvarez. ?The promoters need to get in agreement. I am ready to trade shots today or tomorrow, wherever. They just have to tell me the fight is done.?
Of course, getting the promoters on the same page would be a battle within it self. Top Rank, which promotes Chavez, and Golden Boy, Alvarez?s promoter, are locked in a serious legal battle and events featuring fighters from both firms are unlikely.
