Filipino expats to get boxing treat

DOHA: Filipino expatriates in Qatar will be able to watch live the much awaited rematch between Filipino Manny ‘Pac Man’ Pacquiao and Mexican Erik El Terrible Morales on January 21, to be held in Las Vegas, an official at the Manila-based ABS-CBN TV network, said here yesterday.

The sports event will be telecast via satellite to viewers in Qatar on The Filipino Channel (TFC).

“We are finalising the technical aspect of showing the rematch live so that a lot of our subscribers who are boxing fans and who are very nationalistic will get a chance to witness history in the making, the official said, adding, the match would be available on a pay-per-view basis and ABS-CBN subscribers in Qatar will shortly be informed on the price and mode of payment.

Pacquiao is the only internationally well known Filipino boxer who is still actively fighting for his country. He lost in a very close fight against Morales on March 19 last year, before a capacity crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The Filipino boxer was within one round of a draw of the 12-round bout, but lost 115-113 to Morales. Because of that very close fight a rematch was inevitable. Both boxers belong to the junior lightweight division and are ranked in the top three world ranking.

Pacquiao became world famous boxer in November 2003 when he knocked out the then world featherweight champion, Marco Antonio Barrera, three times in their opening round.
