Floyd Mayweather Jr just shot himself on his foot twice in a span of one week and chances are he may be forced to fight Manny Pacquiao to remain relevant and redeem himself from the ridicule he is now reaping because of his irascible mouth.
A week ago, the flamboyant American went from the Afro-American version of the Ku Klux Klan to an enraged domestic partner.
He first went ballistic by spewing a mouthful of racist-inspired attacks against Pacquiao. When it did not work his way and after realizing he only alienated himself from boxing fans, he offered a meek apology but never really took back the insults he hurled against Pacquiao, now a member of Philippine Congress.
His failure to ruffle Manny?s feathers must have irritated Mayweather no end he vented his ire on his former girlfriend and children.
Now, he is facing felony charges and could also be indicted for domestic violence.
In less than a year since making his comeback, Mayweather spiraled down from an irresistible media copy to a reprehensible subject.
All because he is getting the reverse of attention he wanted to seize from Manny Pacquiao who replaced him as the world?s numero uno pound for pound boxer.
Make no mistake about it. All the Mayweather talks that he is willing to fight Pacquiao are hot air. Floyd never had the intention to fight the man who could possibly beat him. Otherwise, he could have taken the Filipino champion immediately after Mayweather announced his comeback just as Sugar Ray Leonard took Marvin Hagler to emerge from retirement.
Ironically, Mayweather may be forced to fight Manny before announcing his retirement for good. After those ego-deflating missteps last week, Mayweather should realize he is now longer a hot commodity all by himself. They way he was bludgeoned in the press after his racist remarks against Pacquiao and subsequent assault against his former girlfriend, one wonders if boxing fans will still patronize him. Mayweather has hit rock bottom as far as credibility and popularity are concerned.
I don?t think he will sell another million pay per view buys in his next subsequent fights unless the other guy at the opposite corner is named Manny Pacquiao.
The cryptic voices of Oscar de la Hoya and Richard Schaefer in the aftermath of his recent debacles are suggesting Mayweather will have to do the business side of his future fights alone.
There is such thing as pushing your luck too much. Mayweather just did it.
