Sergio Mora was fined a whopping $57,000 Friday afternoon for weighing in three pounds over the contractual 154 lbs. weight for his fight with “Sugar” Shane Mosley Saturday at the Los Angeles Staples Center. That was a 20% penalty of his purse.
Mora dropped the weight and came back an hour later under the weight limit.
Mosley, 46-6 (39 KO’s) is coming back from his May 1st decision loss to Floyd Mayweather and is a solid 3-1 betting favorite over the 21-1-1 (6 KO’s) Mora.
The $44.95 HBO PPV event will also be distributed to over a couple of hundred movie theaters nationwide for an HD big screen viewing via NCM Fathom Events.
Do I really have to explain why coming in three pounds over weight is simply unacceptable for a veteran fighter in this day and age.
True, it is not a world title fight. But still it’s an embarrassment to the sport and the promoter, Golden Boy, must share some responsibility as they must have known the weight would be a problem as the event got closer to the actual weigh in.
I don’t know how to solve this problem. I wish I did. But the event managers and boxers themselves have to be more professional than this.
