JAILED: Floyd Mayweather booked in Las Vegas

FLOYD MAYWEATHER WAS JAILED EARLY FRIDAY MORNING IN LAS VEGAS ON GRAND LARCENY CHARGES RELATED TO ITEMS HE TOOK FROM BABY MOTHER JOSIE HARRIS. NO WORD AS OF YET AS TO WHETHER HE WILL ALSO BE CHARGED WITH DOMESTIC ASSAULT ON THE 31 YEAR OLD WOMAN WHO IS THE MOTHER OF THREE MAYWEATHER CHILDREN.

LV METRO’S NEWS RELEASE ALSO SAYS THEY HAVE RECOMMENDED THE BOXER BE PROSECUTED ON DOMESTIC BATTERY CHARGES AS WELL RELATING FROM THE SAME SITUATION.

CLARK COUNTY DA’S OFFICE WILL DECIDE TO GO FORWARD OR DROP THOSE CHARGES SHORTLY.

oyd Mayweather is paying the high price for one of Las Vegas’ more aggressive and respected criminal defense lawyers but the undefeated boxers feels he has the Wright man for the job.

Unofficial word has Richard Wright, one of the high profile defense attorneys in the hotly competitive Las Vegas market, huddling behind closed doors with his client and Las Vegas Metro Police Department investigators Friday morning.

The barrister and the boxer hope to lay out a case for not making a domestic assault case against the 33 year old fighter, who has been accused of “illegal use of the hands” by Josie Harris, age 31, who is the mother of three Mayweather children.

LV Metro Officer Barbara Morgan had told news media that police wanted to hear Mayweather’s side of the 5 a.m. Thursday incident at the fighter’s fancy, so called “Big Boy Mansion” on Tropical Vine Avenue.

Back in 2007, veteran Review-Journal publisher and columnist Sherman Frederick profiled Wright. The Oct. 14 column was a rumination on “How Do Trial Lawyers Do It.”

Here’s the flavor of that October column:

“It can’t be easy for trial lawyers.

“Take Las Vegas defense attorney extraordinaire Richard Wright, for example. Just a few weeks ago he stood in a St. George, Utah, courtroom helping defend Warren Jeffs.

“You remember Jeffs. He’s the wing nut who claims to religiously rule polygamists around these parts. A prophet, says he, with the divine right to order girls, as soon as they have their period, to marry and bear children. In this case, he “arranged” for a 14-year-old to marry her 19-year-old cousin.

“The girl objected. Jeffs said the marriage was a “revelation from God.” The girl objected still. Jeffs insisted and the marriage took place. She then refused to have sex with her cousin husband. Jeffs, as her prophet, told the girl to bodily give herself to her husband. Eventually, the adults won and the child lost.

“Jeffs’ legal team argued the case amounted to “religious prosecution.”

“The jury saw it differently, as level-headed Americans would (she’s a 14-year-old for goodness sakes) and Jeffs was convicted of being an accomplice to rape…

“Now flash back one year ago to another high-profile case. Richard Wright this time stands with Chrissy Mazzeo, a 32-year-old woman who said she was groped in a parking garage by Jim Gibbons, then a Republican congressman running for governor of Nevada.

“After an evening of drinking with Gibbons, Mazzeo said she was accosted as they walked to her truck. She said the video camera in the parking garage would prove it. It did not. No charges were filed.

“I guess this switchback road is a familiar one for trial attorneys. One day it’s standing up for alleged damsels in distress. The next day it’s prophets ordering 14-year-olds into the sack with their cousins.” It can’t be that easy. Can it?”
