John B. Arum, the 49-year-old son of Hall of Fame boxing promoter Bob Arum, has gone missing while hiking near Seattle, a Top Rank source said. Bob Arum, 78, flew to Seattle from Los Angeles on Tuesday after learning of the news.
Bob Arum was notified of his son?s disappearance shortly before a news conference at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles to promote the Nov. 13 fight between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito. Bob Arum conducted the news conference Tuesday, but will skip the final legs of the promotional tour in New York and Texas.
?They?ve got search parties looking for him right now,? Arum told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday.
The public information officer for the Seattle Police Department had no record of a missing persons complaint filed about John Arum. Sgt. John Urquhart of the King County Sheriff?s office said his agency also is not doing a search, though he noted, ?There are several other counties around here which could be involved.?
Urquhart said a Washington state law requires a sheriff?s office to notify a search and rescue clearinghouse before it conducts a search. He said there is no record of a search at this stage.
?It does not appear to be a lost hiker at this point, from everything we can deduce,? Urquhart said.
The Snohomish County Sheriff?s office also reported no record of a search for Arum.
John Arum is an attorney with the Seattle law firm of Ziontz, Chestnut, Varnell, Berley & Slonim. He graduated from Reed College and the University of Washington Law School.
