I sat down and spoke with Floyd Mayweather Sr yesterday afternoon and got his thoughts on many different topics in boxing. One of them being of course his son’s decision to not sign the contract for the Manny Pacquiao fight. Big Floyd has his theory, and he emphasized that it’s just his opinion, and not something that Floyd Jr told him.
According to Big Floyd, his son chose not to fight Manny Pacquiao in 2010 due to tax reason. Floyd Jr fought Shane Mosley in 2010, and according to his dad, he made around 40 million dollars. Big Floyd spoke about it yesterday, ” My son fought Shane Mosley earlier this year and he made about 40 million dollars. If he would have signed to fight Pacquiao this year, he would have made around 50 or even 60 million dollars. If you add those two numbers, it’s around 100 million dollars. Do you know what the government would do to 100 million dollars?” Of course Big Floyd is talking about taxes, ” They would take half of that. That’s basically taking away the money that he made when he fought Shane Mosley”
This is a story that just wont go away. It’s a very polarizing story with two sides very angry at one another, and with both sides having their own theory. Of course the Pacquiao side believe that it is simply Floyd Mayweather being scared to fight. They believe that Mayweather is afraid to lose his undefeated record. The Mayweather side firmly believe that Manny is taking steroids. They question why Pacquiao has not FULLY agreed to random blood testing including up to the day of the fight. And now with Floyd Sr coming out on 8CountNews.com and publicly saying what a lot of sites have been reporting, Floyd passed on the fight as to not have to pay taxes on around 100 million dollars.

When I was in Southaven, MS last month for the Showtime boxing card featuring Ishe Smith Vs. Fernando Guerrero, I asked several of the Mississippi boxing fans their thoughts on the Floyd vs Manny saga. It’s split right down the middle depending on who is a fan of which fighter. Again, very polarizing. If you ask a Pacquiao fan, the fight is not happening because Floyd is scared. If you ask a Mayweather fan, Floyd passed on the fight because Manny is on steroids, and tax reasons.
Let’s see what happens in 2011…….
