Friday Results: Mercito Gesta stays unbeaten on slow night

Not much going on last night to say the least.

Tucson, Arizona Mercito Gesta TKO-7 Genaro Trazancos. Gesta (19-0-1, 9 KO) stayed unbeaten in the bumped-up main event of Solo Boxeo at Casino del Sol in Tucson, stopping 35-year-old Trazancos (22-12-1, 13 KO) at 0:53 of the seventh round. The 22-year-old Filipino southpaw turned pro at 16 and has mostly faced bums and journeymen (including, for some reason, two very wide wins over Cristian Favela), but does have some real promise. He’s fighting at 135-140 pounds for now, after having turned pro in 2003 at just 110 pounds. He’s like Manny Pacquiao in that regard, and also he’s Filipino and left-handed. So there’s a lot of ways to compare him to Manny Pacquiao, with none of them being his in-ring performances or ability, at least to this date. He’s not one of the most hyped prospects around, but then hype doesn’t always mean much. Noe Lopez UD-8 Adolfo Landeros. I guess this is an upset, although it’s hardly a shocker or anything. Landeros was set to be the night’s main event sacrificial lamb, but Michael Franco somehow tore his retina and pulled out just hours before the event. So Landeros met Lopez, and was floored in the first round and soundly defeated. Scores were 79-72 (twice) and 78-73. Lopez is now 6-5 (4 KO), while Landeros falls to 20-15-1 (9 KO). It’s Landeros’ fifth straight loss.

Corona, California Mauricio Herrera UD-8 Hector Alatorre. Alatorre (16-11, 5 KO) has become a favorite stepping stone\ for veterans and up-and-comers alike, and has lost 11 of his last 13. You may remember him from the carry-job Victor Ortiz put on in February in Golden Boy’s first FSN edition of Fight Night Club. Herrera (15-1, 7 KO) swept all three cards, 80-72. Miguel Diaz TKO-1 Malcolm Franklin. Diaz (2-0, 1 KO) knocked down Franklin three times in 2:52.
