Undefeated Jr. Middleweight hopeful Vanes Martirosyan hasn?t exactly elevated his status with his 2010 campaign thus far. A questionable decision over former champion Kassim ?The Dream? Ouma followed by a ho-hum victory over Brookyln’s Joe Greene make up his portfolio for the year and he is in need of something more meaningful before the year is up.
Against Ouma we saw Martirosyan start fast against the Ugandan fighter and take command early as he hammered the 31-year old with ripping shots to the body and head. Ouma would weather the storm, drop Martirosyan in the 9th and pour on the pressure as the fight winded down. After ten rounds a good deal of spectators inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino felt that Ouma had indeed done enough to steal the win on that Las Vegas night but Martirosyan escaped with the victory.
Five months later Martirosyan would find himself in against Greene, a raw but powerful 24-year old full of bravado. Both sides were talkative heading into the contest and fireworks were expected but the bout failed to live up to the hype as Martirosyan claimed an extremely uneventful ten-round decision in which there seemed to be more posturing than actual punching.
On December 4th the man nicknamed ?The Nightmare? will look to shake the aftertaste from his previous two outings when he meets up with Poland?s Pawel Wolak. Crude yet limited, Wolak can punch a little bit but is known just as much for his lone loss, an August 2008 decision to Ishe Smith, as he is for any of his other wins. This appears to be Martirosyan?s fight for the taking and it will be nestled underneath the Miguel Cotto-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. headlining bout.
Word recently leaked that Martirosyan will be making the trek to Manila in the Philippines to train for the contest alongside WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and Chavez Jr. Both men will undoubtedly be giving Pacquiao work in order to get ready for his November 13th dance partner, Antonio Margarito.
Martirosyan, Pacquiao, and young Chavez all have fights lined up and will undoubtedly grow closer to one another through the work they will be putting into the camp. After their time in the Philippines the trio, alongside trainer Freddie Roach, will make the trip back to the States to resume training and Roach?s Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, California. Martirosyan is in need of a big win to restore the luster on his young career and a secluded training camp with Pacquiao, Chavez and Roach seems to be just what he needs at the moment.
