Nonito Donaire’s purse minimums and future goals sunk 118 tournament participation

There has been a lot of speculation on the reasons why Nonito Donaire and Top Rank Promotions decided not to participate in the 118-pound tournament being put together by Showtime.

During an appearance on The Boxing Truth Radio, Donaire?s lawyer Michael Miller shed some light on the reasoning behind the decision.

According to Miller, Donaire?s contracted $250,000 per fight minimum with Top Rank would not be met during some rounds of the Showtime tournament, and like Arum, Team Donaire preferred a single-elimination tournament which would free up Donaire to escalate in weight sooner than later.

Another key factor, according to Miller, was Fernando Montiel (also involved with Top Rank) and his decision to not participate in the tournament. Miller made it clear that Montiel is Nonito?s number one short-term goal, as he hope the pair will fight before the end of the year.
