Dipolog City (11 August) — He may be another Manny Pacquiao in the making.
Jhundriel Ramonal, 21, of Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte emerged as the country’s bantamweight champion after he had floored Sonny Gonzales of Mandaluyong City in their fight in Laguna recently.
Ramonal, who is now based in Manila, is under boxing trainer Tembong del Rosario of Wow Boxing stable.
Another guy from Sindangan known as Richard Pumicpic, 20, is now also rated number 11 in Philippine boxing. Like Ramonal, he is under the tutelage of trainer Tembong del Rosario.
Both boxers came home recently and paid a courtesy call on Provincial Tourism Officer Ivan Patrick Ang, who himself is a boxing aficionado. Ang encouraged them to continue honing their skills and abilities so they can follow in the footsteps of boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.
Ang also disclosed that one of the programs pursued by the provincial government under Gov. Rolando E. Yebes is the promotion of the boxing sport among the young. “Boxing can certainly help promote the fledgling tourism industry in this part of the country,” the governor said. (PIA-ZN)
