Sometimes, the pictures do tell the story.
At ringside at the Scottstrade Center in St. Louis Saturday night, where light heavyweight Tavoris Cloud outpointed always game but ancient Glen Johnson and hometown herp Devon Alexander “The Great” decisioned plucky Andriy Kotelnik, promoter Don King had a special guest.
Just as King promised, his ringside companion was none other than his new BFF, Floyd Joy Mayweather Jr., who is a free agent despite having worked in the past with King rival Golden Boy.
Mayweather’s flrtation with King has moved to a new level. Maybe this is really about, as King has said, a deep dissatisaction that Mayweather has with adviser Al Haymon and/or Oscar de la Hoya’s crew.
We can’t say for sure until Mayweather pipes up.
The Goldens and Haymon continue their typical radio silence although Richie Rich Schaefer must be done with his lame, “they enjoyed the lobster” cracks about a crustacean meal King bought for Mayweather in Boca Raton.
Don King, the old flagwaver and super patriot. stands next to round card beauty who stands next to King’s target, free agent fighter Floyd Joy Mayweather Jr. at Scottstrade Center in St. Louis. As King said he would, Money May was DK’s special ringside guest to watch hometown hero Devon Alexander “The Great” in victory over Andriy Kotelnik (DKP Photo, David Martin-Warr)
But you don’t have to be Siggie Freud to see that Mayweather seemed to be having a ball hanging with the King.
Mayweather has also expressed admiration for Alexander, going so far as to say he would “pass the torch” to the St. Louis fighter when he finally hangs up his gloves.
And, talk about misreading a situation. Wasn’t it only yesterday that Mayweather’s (former?) handlers put out the word that L’il Floyd, fresh from his May 1 victory over Shane Mosley, was sick and tired of all things boxing.
They said that Money May wanted to get away from the boxing business.
Who would you say is more bling, bling, bling, Don King or Money May (DKP Photo, David Martin-Warr)
Then why he is riding with the King, first in South Florida and now in The Lou?
If there is a war for the heart and mind of Mayweather, and it certainly appears to be one, I’d say King, who turns 79 12 days from now, is the leader in the clubhouse.
Oh, to be a fly on the Golden wall or at the Haymon Mansion.
That giant lobster in Boca came out of his or her shell. Isn’t about time Haymon and the Goldens did also?
Nobody gets down with OPP like DK, baby, nobody.
