Round 1:
Leonard indeed comes forward towards Mayweather and is dictating the fight. Leonard is bouncing as his famous style dictates, while Floyd is in his typical defensive posture with his hands high and leaning forward. Flick, flick by Leonard ? nothing meaningful. Leonard then leaps forward at Floyd as he backs into a corner and there is a quick 1-2 by Leonard that Mayweather turns from and then clinches. Leonard hooks to the body as they clinch ? Padilla orders a break. Leonard bouncing back and forth, flicking his left jab ? blocked by Mayweather. As you might expect, Leonard is looking the more relaxed fighter while Mayweather is tense and juts forward with his hands up. Mayweather tries a 1-2 and connects with his jab but not the right. At the two minute mark Mayweather connects with his famous ?pot shot? right hand which backs Leonard up ? Mayweather comes forward and connects a jab, right, left hook then dunks under a vicious left hook by Leonard, to the ?ohh? of the crowd and then clinches. After Padilla steps in and separates the two, ?pop? ? another pot shot right hand by Mayweather, which coaxes a smile from Leonard. Leonard flicks his jab offensively but they are caught my Mayweather?s raised right hand. Leonard bobbing in and out and moving fluidly on the balls of his feet ? a double jab pops Mayweather?s eye but the second jab misses. At the bell, another Leonard jab and a power right cross from Leonard glances off Floyd?s shoulder. The round ends with the tense crowd sitting on a spring and ?oooing? at Leonard?s 1-2, but Mayweather?s crafty, timely shots win him the round.

Round 2:
Leonard seems not yet ready to engage Mayweather. Flick, flick jabs are blocked by Pretty Boy. Sugar Ray is bobbing in and out and studying Mayweather, who times Leonard?s bobbing and BANG ? catches Leonard with a lead right as he bounces forward, sending Leonard stumbling and against the turnbuckle! As Mayweather leans in and fires another right hand it is blocked and grabbed by Leonard with his left arm, and as Padilla comes around to pop Mayweather?s hand free, Floyd slaps one, two, three lefts to the head as Leonard ties him up. Leonard is smiling. The tense crowd was waiting for the first big moment and they are up and cheering. The opportunistic Mayweather is the savvy, experienced professional and knows this may be a long fight, so in a calculated fashion, since he knows he just went ahead in the round, widens the distance. The rattled Leonard tries to press the fight a little as the round enters its final minute. Pop, left jab by Leonard. Pop, left jab by Leonard. It?s already clear that Leonard is going to have to lean forward and throw heavier shots?then POW ? another solid pot shot lead right cross by Mayweather at the 10 second whistle! Another round for Mayweather.

Round 3:
On Dundee?s instructions, Leonard comes out in round three, intent on putting together some combinations. Every punch by Leonard is a 1-2 while Floyd backs up and blocks or eludes the shots. There are a lot of punches thrown by Leonard but none of significance through the first half of the round. All eyes seem to be on Leonard as the action is coming from him. Leonard?s punching thumps off of Floyd?s arms as he blocks them and the crowd recognizes the punches aren?t getting through.
Leonard presses forward again and lands a great 1-2-3 ? a double jab with the jabs basically missing, but a right cross that connects ? his best punch of the fight. 10 seconds later the exact same combination but the first hard jab lands as well.
This time Leonard, precociously ring savvy with phenomenal instincts, actually baits a right cross from Mayweather with a lazy jab and catches Mayweather with a solid lead right followed by a left hook to the midsection! Floyd fires back his first solid 1-2: a hard left cross followed by a right cross ? which misses, and Leonard just misses with a big left hook! A big exchange at the bell.

Dundee: ?Here we go! Boom, boom, boom! We like those combinations!? Says Roger Mayweather to Floyd: ?He?s coming right at you and he?s ready for a hook. Start throwing hooks.?
Round 4:
Out comes Leonard again with less bounce and the more willing fighter to exchange. He is beginning to execute his strategy and stalk Mayweather, who is the counter puncher. Jab, Jab, Jab by Leonard to keep his motor running, and a combination lands with Mayweather tying him up. Almost all the jobs are being caught by Mayweather with his glove up and open, but Leonard?s activity is causing inaction from Mayweather through the first third of the round. Leonard fires successive 1-2 combinations, Mayweather takes a step back and Leonard fires a hard left hook to Mayweather?s chest, and then a hard right hand that Mayweather escapes as he turns his head! Leonard?s miss leaves him exposed and Mayweather lobs a hard right to the side of his head and then a big left! Leonard is in the corner and as Mayweather steps forward Leonard turns his hands loose and fires 6 one-twos ending with the left to Mayweather?s head! Most of the punches were off target but the crowd is standing as Mayweather takes a step back?Leonard comes forward and BANG, a big left from Mayweather ? just as Leonard backs up against the turnbuckle Floyd pot shots a big right hand! Leonard clinches! Padilla separates the fighters and Leonard, moving forward, sneaks in a solid right cross after his jab at the bell. Both fighters talk smack after the bell as Roger Mayweather jumps in the ring and pulls Floyd to the corner by the arm. A great round!

Recap: After 1/3 of the scheduled 12 rounds, Mayweather has established himself as the more stout fighter ? he?s a bit thicker and two inches shorter, but the height advantage for Leonard isn?t pronounced. Although Leonard?s hand speed is faster, Floyd?s defensive quickness is equal to Leonard?s, and Mayweather?s craftiness and selective punching won the first two rounds. The two inch reach advantage for Leonard is a non-factor so far. Leonard seems the heavy handed puncher as his shots ?thump? off of Mayweather, even though the vast majority of them are blocked. Leonard is the busier fighter, but it is not ?effective aggressiveness? ? will the judges make this distinction? No fighter has been hurt although a few power shots have caused both to momentarily lose their balance.

Tompkins: ?It?s a ?cat and mouse? fight, folks. Leonard is the cat but the mouse can punch!? Larry Merchant: ?Leonard at this age may not be ready for a fully mature Floyd Mayweather.? Says Tommy Hearns: ?I am surprised at this point that Floyd seems to be as strong as Ray.?
Ringside Announcer Harold Ledermen is extolling Mayweather?s ring generalship ? he seems to be the fighter in better command and doing what he wants, and has Mayweather up 3 rounds to 1.
Round 5:
Inexplicably, Leonard looks a little tired. He seems content through the first minute to stay back and jab. Both fighters exchange left jabs. Mayweather?s left eye has a touch of swelling, but he looks very good and composed. Leonard?s body language suggests he senses this is a tough one and he has not figured out Mayweather.
The gutsy Leonard again moves in after about a minute. He can?t get clean looks at Floyd and realizes he is going to have to punch his way in: a pawing jab is followed by a crisp jab and then another right cross ? all blocked, and then Leonard leans in and comes in wide with a left hook ? which is also blocked by Mayweather. Leonard goes back in and fires more combinations. Mayweather clowns and smiles, and leans back against the ropes, but Leonard moves in fast and delivers his best punch of the fight ? a right uppercut through Floyd?s defense that bloodies his nose and the crowd stands and yells its approval.
Right before the bell Mayweather then lands his best 1-2 of the fight ? two solid crosses through Leonard?s defenses. Were they enough to steal the round?

Dundee: ?Round 6, baby! We?re doing fine, son. Keep firing the combinations.? Roger Mayweather: ?Come on now, Floyd, we need to start hooking when he lunges in.?
Larry Merchant and Tommy Hearns agree that Leonard is exposed when he lunges in, but they say that?s his best chance to win because Floyd may be too tough to outbox.
Round 6:
Sugar Ray Leonard
Leonard again starts lethargically through the first part of the round, seeming content to bob and weave. Mayweather connects on three left jabs. After a minute Leonard bites down hard on his mouthpiece and digs a big left hook to Mayweather?s side and Floyd moves back! Leonard and Mayweather exchange left hooks ? both on the button! Mayweather wobbles! The crowd erupts as Leonard moves in ? then Leonard gets caught with a big right cross by Mayweather! Leonard lowers his head and unloads a six punch flurry that ends in a hard hook as Mayweather is against the ropes! Mayweather grabs and clinches ? Padilla slaps the gloves out and Leonard fires another four punch combination, the load up on an uppercut that knocks out Floyd?s mouthpiece! Floyd comes back with a perfect right cross which stops Leonard, and then as Leonard turns to load up on another left hook Mayweather nails him with a right uppercut, which stops Leonard?s forward progress.
Padilla stops the action to rinse Mayweather?s mouthpiece ? Dundee is screaming at Leonard over the crowd to stay on him! While not hurt, Mayweather was wobbled, and the dramatic popping out of his mouthpiece is too much for the judges to ignore.

During the break, Dundee is working with an end swell on Leonard?s left eye, which is cut and bleeding ? not heavily, and the eye is blackened. Mayweather?s nose is bleeding continuously ? but it doesn?t look broken.
Round 7:
Leonard wants to stay on the offensive, and he comes out flatfooted ? and it seems like Mayweather feels the need to hold his ground. The war is on! Like a back alley brawl, both let go of their hands, but Mayweather wobbles Leonard with a big right hand followed by the left hook Roger Mayweather was pleading for.
Leonard looks hurt! It?s now Leonard that is holding on. Padilla cranes himself between both fighters, with Leonard now bleeding more from the cut above his swelling left eye that the hook agitated. Leonard decided to get on his bicycle and Mayweather predictably doesn?t chase. The savvy Mayweather figures to have won the round so far. Dundee is screaming and pointing for Leonard to engage ? in the last 30 seconds after exchanges of jabs, Leonard again moves in ? taking a one-two from Pretty Boy to get inside, and there go the combinations! Mayweather, last truly tested against Jose Luis Castillo, drops the left to send in a hook and Leonard?s right hand nails him on the jaw. Mayweather wobbled again! Leonard, an underrated finisher, pounds on Mayweather as the bell rings and nails him again, inadvertently, after the bell ? the crowd is going wild and chanting ?Sugar Ray, Sugar Ray? at the echo of the bell.

The condition of both fighters looks like the fight is already over. The pace has been brutal and they look like it. Leonard will enter the 8th with Vaseline dolloped onto his left eyebrow and his left eye is swelling shut. Mayweather?s face is swollen and his nose continues to bleed. Roger Mayweather orders him to start boxing, ?Get back to what you do best. Just box the guy!?
Round 8:
A boxing masterpiece by Floyd Mayweather ? pure and simple. Mayweather follows his uncle?s advice and pecks at Leonard?s eye while Leonard seems to be slowing. Pop, pop, pop goes his left hand. Through two minutes Mayweather rolls away from Leonard, who now seems to be taking a break. Both fighters clinch and Mayweather pushes Leonard as they separate ? it seems in response to something Leonard said. At the 10 second alarm signaling the end of the round, Pretty Boy finishes with a beautiful left-right that punctuates a round most easily won since Round 2 with Leonard?s left eye even worse.

Recap: Two thirds through, Tompkins and Merchant are already dubbing this a classic and express a concern about Sugar Ray?s left eye. Merchant observes that the rounds Leonard has won, he has done so more impressively with multiple-punch combinations, but he hasn?t won enough of them.
Ringside Announcer Harold Ledermen claims Leonard turned things around and won 3 of the last four rounds, but Pretty Boy Floyd has found the prescription to win the fight in the 8th. He also observes Leonard?s eye is a growing problem. He says, ?I have the fight even, but Leonard is losing.? Guest commentator Hearns agrees, claiming that although he couldn?t imagine it happening before the fight, Leonard actually looks ready to go!
At this point in the fight, the announcers are right; we?re even.

Round 9:
Mayweather picks up where he left off. He decides around the one minute mark, after winning the first 60 seconds, to test Leonard?s resolve. Mayweather pot shots a big right hand but Leonard remains steady. Three successive jabs open the cut over the left eye into a gash ? the left thigh of Leonard?s white drunks are now crimson with his blood. At the two minute mark, Leonard bites down hard and throws a great three punch combination with the first two landing to Mayweather?s torso but the left to the head is blocked. Mayweather, going for a big shot, uncharacteristically loses his balance after whiffing on a big left hook. But another round for Mayweather.

Between rounds, Padilla walks over to give the Leonard corner a concerned look, which they recognize as such. Dundee turns to Leonard and says, ?You?re blowin? it son! I need 9 minutes.? Leonard is in desperate need of a second wind. Mayweather looks rejuvenated and is thinking to bank another round.
Round 10:
Leonard gets off his stool, smiling, but nervously. The crowd starts to chant to cheer him on. The ?Sugar Ray? crowd starts to get neutralized by Mayweather?s fans. Mayweather raises his right hand to acknowledge the crowd. The bell rings. Out comes Leonard with his eyes squinted and the gash on the eye filled with coagulant, biting down on his mounthpiece.
Mayweather is the fresher fighter and is keeping his distance, sensing he has a slight lead and he is even less willing to get into any exchange ? settling for one punch exchanges and no more. Leonard begins ?bull rush? tactics ? actually trying to feint his body in one direction and then leaning forward to the other side, in an attempt to get in close. Mayweather ties him up every time, which leaves Leonard banging to Floyd?s body with his left while his right arm is trapped by Mayweather in clinches. At one point Leonard actually violently yanks both hands away as Mayweather grabs.
Floyd Mayweather
Pretty Boy Floyd is boxing Leonard beautifully and Leonard keeps missing with his lead left hooks, which glance off Mayweather?s shoulder. Mayweather is popping his jab, which seems to be heavier. Floyd?s jabs begin to pop Leonard?s head back when they connect.

Barry Tompkins is wondering aloud if the fight should be stopped simply because of the blood, which has thoroughly stained Leonard?s trunks. Harold Lederman is claiming on his card that Leonard needs two convincing rounds to make it a draw. Larry Merchant: ?Mayweather has fought the more efficient fight. Can Sugar Ray summon a historic six minutes and somehow get through that incredible Mayweather defense?? Tommy Hearns: I have to give Mayweather credit, but the fight?s not over yet.
Round 11:
It?s just not going to happen for Leonard, who is now spent and the blood is not stopping. Mayweather is leaning forward in his now classic pose and alertly pushing away Leonard jabs. After two left-right combinations, Padilla separates the fighters and calls the ringside physician while Mayweather is sent to a neutral corner. The close up reveals an ugly gash that Dundee wipes, only to fill with blood again.
Leonard is sent back into the fight as it is determined the blood is not getting into the left eye, which is almost swollen shut. Just under a minute into Round 11 Mayweather unloads another 1-2 with emphasis on the right cross, which draws an ?ohh? from the crowd. Leonard is still alert and game, but tired and beaten. Mayweather lands another big right hand. Leonard leans in and gets rocked by a Mayweather left hook ? Pretty Boy will not engage, though as he has this fight won.
The last minute of the round is more of a sparring session with Mayweather keeping his distance and Leonard knowing if he moves in he?s going to get rocked ? so he doesn?t.
At the bell, Leonard smiles at Mayweather in acknowledgement of another round lost and Pretty Boy turns with his patented grin to a welcoming corner.

Over the objection of a true warrior, Dundee assures Leonard there will be other days. The bloody red towel is thrown into the air and lands at Padilla?s feet.
Technically, the result is Mayweather by TKO in the 12th.

As I look back on my piece, I consider this was the more experienced fighter?s night. I think any debate over this outcome might come from Leonard apologists who will argue that Sugar Ray was a better fighter after the Hearns fight because he likely gained a great deal of confidence at that pivotal stage of his career; however, I think it?s fair to say that Leonard?s eye condition ? ultimately diagnosed to be a detached retina, would physically not permitted a fight with Mayweather for some time after. Remember though, that Leonard beat Hearns on that night that I diagnosed as his prime, and all that went with the great fighter Leonard was at that time in his career ? at his Welterweight prime. This fight was a better Mayweather at his Welterweight prime than Leonard at his.
