Moments ago at the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, Robert ?The Ghost? Guerrero pulled out a ten round decision over dogged veteran Joel Casamayor. Guerrero started the bout strong, buzzing Casamayor with a left hand in the first and dominating the first half of the fight. The Gilroy, California native scored a knockdown in the second and Casamayor seemed to be on his last legs.
To Casamayor?s credit he would keep his cool and find a way to remain in the fight and out of harm?s way. As the bout moved forward Casmayor began finding a home for his left hand and even scored a knockdown with roughly a minute left in the tenth. But it was simply too little, too late for the two-division champion as Guerrero was able to hang on until the final seconds ticked away.
Scores of 98-89 twice and 97-90 all read in Guerrero?s favor as he improves his record to 27-1-1 with 18 knockouts. Casamayor drops to 37-5-1 with 22 knockouts and at this point in his career he has become a steppingstone for those looking for success between 135 and 140 pounds. Guerrero fought a solid fight early but his lack of activity over the second half of the fight was troubling. Coming into the contest at 138 pounds, Guerrero will have to step his game up when facing the best Jr. Welterweights and Lightweights of the world.
