While 2010 has so far been a relative disappointment in terms of meaningful matchups and overall excitement, there are still a few bouts on the horizon worth looking forward to. On Saturday, September 18th Juan Manuel Lopez will defends his WBO featherweight crown against always dangerous Rafael Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada in a fight that boxing is desperately looking forward to.
Lopez is coming off of a thrilling second round knockout over Bernabe Concepcion in which he was dropped at the end of the first round before regrouping and dismantling his 22-year old opponent one stanza later. Lopez sports a 29-0 record with 26 knockouts and is regarded as one of the rising champions in the sport due to his potent attack and boxing ability.
Marquez is coming off of a 3rd round stoppage over fierce rival Israel Vasquez this past May at the Staples Center. The Mexico City native has one titles at 118 and 122 pounds while gracing the pound for pound stage because of the brilliance of his offensive attack and willingness to lay everything on the line. At 35 years old Marquez looks to be a few steps past his best and will likely be facing an uphill battle against Lopez but the veteran?s desire and power are not to be discounted.
The two men came face to face today in Los Angeles, California and spoke to the press about their showdown. Less than two months away, the Lopez-Marquez bout is sure to be fireworks from start to finish.
