When Manny Pacquiao fights, I watch. Leading up to the fight, I get excited. Following the fight, I usually read all the material I can on the bout the night before and often seek out highlights on youtube.
That was the way it was when he annihilated Oscar De La Hoya, destroyed Ricky Hatton and beatdown Miguel Cotto. It was even that way when he he cruised to a decision over the survival minded Joshua Clottey.
But Antonio Margarito? I can honestly say the talk about this fight happening has me in full yawn mode.
From a competitive standpoint, Margarito got absolutely blitzed in his last fight against an elite opponent when he was a human punching bag for Shane Mosley en route to being stopped in the 9th round. In his most recent fight, which was not against an elite opponent, he looked unspectacular against an average opponent winning a unanimous decision over Roberto Garcia.
From a moral standpoint, Margarito was caught with tampered handwraps prior to his fight with Mosley and all of his previous wins are met with a big question mark now.
Does Margarito deserve the fight from a competitive point of view? No. Do I think that all of his accomplishments in the ring are tainted by the fact that he tried to enter the ring against Mosley with plaster of paris in his gloves? Yes.
So while I’m a Pacquiao fan, i really don’t have any interest in him fighting Margecheato.
