When he’s right, well, he’s right. Columnist David Mayo of the Grand Rapids (MI) Press, Floyd Mayweather’s hometown paper and I agree that only Floyd knows all the variables and only he will make the decision on “The Fight” moving forward in November, next March or at all at this point.
I was so sure nothing would happen in the past three weeks that you may have noticed I took a vacation and didn’t cover anything related to “The Fight.”
Mayo’s exact words today were, “All we know with certainty, is that a decision is forthcoming, and the only one who possesses more inside knowledge than that is named Floyd Mayweather.”
All the speculation during the next week will also lead to nothing. Floyd will come down from the mountain and talk to us when he is good and ready.
Floyd has had past promoters such as Bob Arum and Dan Goossen and now is on a fight by fight basis with Golden Boy (Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer) while Manny Pacquiao has gone through the likes of Murad Muhammad, Golden Boy and currently Arum and his Top Rank.
Mayo said and I agree that we don’t know what was in Arum’s latest offer. What would Floyd be agreeing to and compromising on? What is still on the table and what has been removed?
Both fighters are financially secure enough to walk away from this fight and probably boxing in general but I don’t think it will come down to that.
Arum has to play out his bluff with a fight for Pacquiao against either Antonio Margarito or Miguel Cotto on November 13th. Mayweather certainly showed no ring rust after dominating Juan Manuel Marquez after taking two years off. So Floyd can handle another layoff but will be looking at age 34 – just out of a fighter’s prime.
It seems to me most writers and fans believe that Pacquiao will eventually cave in to Mayweather’s demands just for the chance to finally fight him. But I disagree. I believe Arum and ultimately Pacquiao might take the hard line and leave Mayweather at the alter if they don’t get what they want.
It seems Arum has played the media so Pacquiao seems the one in the white hat and Mayweather the bad guy in the black hat.
