While Sergio Martinez waits the inevitable conclusion that he won’t be fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr, HBO has gone ahead and told Martinez’s promoter who Lou DiBella that the only other fight their interested in seeing is a rematch with Paul Williams. However, both camps are reporting the desire to pursue other fights that this rematch. According to AOL’s Boxing Fanhouse, Lou DiBella said the following: “And I’ve got to tell you — and I said this right after the fight in Atlantic City — that I don’t really want that fight now. But ultimately, I don’t have a choice what fight the networks will choose” Ricky Hatton accuses Manny Pacquiao of taking PEDs As much as I would personally love to see this fight, I do think it’s rather premature. I believe there are other potential fights at 154 and 160 for both fighters. In fact, DiBella feels the same: “There’s a whole talent pool at 154 and 160. There’s Angulo, there’s Martirosyan, there’s Miguel Cotto, there’s Shane Mosley. I mean, why shouldn’t these guys — Serio Martinez and Paul Williams — get an opportunity to clean out the division of other guys who are considered the best before fighting each other again?” I have to agree with Lou here. Let’s have Sergio and Paul Williams clear out a division or two then fight down the road. A few more wins for each fighter and their respective stars would shine brighter. In fact, it could be a big-time fight, let’s say in late 2011. Sergio does deserve a rematch down the line, but the two division champion also deserves a chance to unify some titles first….
